Pub Crawl Safety: How to Stay Safe and Make the Most of Your Night Out in Nagoya

Embarking on a pub crawl through Nagoya's vibrant nightlife scene can be an unforgettable experience, and the city is filled with colorful characters who are ready to share a drink and a story. But just like any night out, it's crucial to be aware of your surroundings and take steps to ensure your safety. In this guide, we'll explore the ins and outs of pub crawl safety in Nagoya, with tips on navigating the city's drinking establishments, transportation, and potential hazards. Of course, these all apply when planning and doing a pub crawl independently. If you're doing the pub crawl with us, don't worry about anything we're saying beyond this point. We know not everyone wants to pay $25 for one of their most memorable nights out though, and that's okay. If that's you, keep reading and stay safe.

When planning your Nagoya pub crawl, it's essential to choose the right bars and pubs that suit your tastes and comfort levels. Take some time to research the establishments you're interested in visiting, read reviews, and ask locals for recommendations. And remember, if you ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe in a bar, don't hesitate to leave and find a more welcoming environment. After all, the city is filled with hard-working, blue-collar folks engaged in a variety of trades, just like you and me. And if someone tries to lead you down a dark alley to a hidden bar, then...Eh, this is Japan and it might be fine. Use your discretion.

When you're navigating Nagoya's nightlife, it's always a good idea to stick with a group or pair up with a friend. There's safety in numbers, and having a drinking buddy can help you keep an eye on your surroundings and provide assistance if needed. Plus, it's always more fun to have someone to share the stories of the night with. Think of it this way: if you turn around to find that someone has suddenly closed the bar door and locked it with you inside, you want to be able to say "there's 5 of us and 1 of him". Odds are you're winning, so keep ratios in mind.

One of the most important aspects of a successful pub crawl is knowing your limits when it comes to alcohol consumption. Be aware of how much you're drinking, and don't hesitate to pace yourself or switch to water or non-alcoholic beverages. It's also crucial to keep an eye on your drink at all times, even in seemingly safe establishments. After the fourth location you may find yourself three sheets to the wind, but it's essential to stay vigilant and maintain control. Generally we recommend one, maximum two drinks per location – and that might be a lot if you're a lightweight.

Navigating Nagoya's public transportation system can be an adventure in itself, especially after a night of drinking. Plan your route in advance and be aware of the schedules for trains and buses. If you find yourself in need of a taxi, ensure that you use a reputable taxi company or a ride-sharing service like Uber. The subway in Nagoya stops running at around 00:00, so we highly recommend getting accommodation in Sakae itself so you can walk home, or near Nagoya station (but not much farther than that) so you can have a short, cheap taxi ride home.

When you're out on a pub crawl, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement and let your guard down. But it's important to keep your valuables safe and secure, especially in crowded establishments. Consider using a money belt or a hidden pouch to store your cash, cards, and identification. And remember, it's always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to protecting your belongings. Okay, that's a general disclaimer – in reality, you're your own biggest enemy with your belongings. It's so easy to lose your room keys or your wallet. If you do lose it, it'll probably be found and handed in somewhere. No one wants your room key, unless you're like, famous or something. But it is soooooooo bothersome to figure out where you lost it and navigate this scenario in Japanese, so just keep an eye on your things and do a regular check for them.

While many bars and pubs in Nagoya welcome international visitors, it's essential to be aware of local customs and etiquette. This can help you avoid misunderstandings and ensure that you're treated with respect by bar staff and patrons. For example, understanding the Japanese tradition of pouring drinks for others or knowing the proper way to use chopsticks can go a long way in making friends and enjoying your night out. Another thing, which people shy away from talking about on the internet, but the Japanese can also be a bit...How do we say this...Ethnocentric? No...Nationalist? That's not right...Oh, yeah, racist. You might not be welcome everywhere you go, and you might raise an eyebrow or two (but never three) when a bar owner turns you away because "we're full", despite there being one patron inside. Go figure.

In case of emergencies or unexpected situations, it's essential to have a backup plan and stay connected with your friends or family. Make sure your phone is charged before you head out for the night, and consider bringing a portable charger just in case. Share your itinerary with someone who's not joining you on the pub crawl, and check in with them periodically throughout the evening. Having a backup plan, like knowing the location of a nearby hotel or a friend's place where you can crash if needed, can provide peace of mind and help you stay safe. If you do find yourself on 0% without a charger, you can always get a portable charger from the convenience store for around $50. But in that case, you may as well have just joined our pub crawl. Twice!

As the night wears on and the drinks flow, you may find yourself striking up conversations with locals or fellow pub-crawlers. While most of these encounters are likely to be friendly and harmless, it's important to be mindful of your surroundings and trust your instincts. Not everyone may be as they seem, and this is a reeeeeaaally fine line between an adventure you'll never forget and finding yourself with a black eye and a missing waller. If you feel uncomfortable or sense that something is off, don't hesitate to remove yourself from the situation and seek help if necessary. If someone offers you a massage at 2 in the morning, surprise, something else is on the menu. Generally if people are asking you if you want to do XYZ (or XXX?) in English, there's something to be weary about. If the person is speaking to you entirely in Japanese and ghosting you if you respond in English, well, there was probably something fun within your reach and you let yourself down by not studying enough Japanese before arriving in Japan. I think we strayed off topic here, which reminds us...

Even with the best-laid plans, unexpected events can still occur during a night out. From sudden weather changes to establishments closing early, it's crucial to be adaptable and ready to change course if needed. Keep an open mind, and embrace the spontaneity that comes with a pub crawl adventure. Don't let the pouring rain put you off; the most dedicated party people keep going with an umbrella, or move into night clubs. Go into the night clubs, by the way – the subcultures of Japan will blow your mind. In particular there's this place called Mago. It's a bit of a ways away from central Sakae, but you can get there with a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute taxi ride. Unreal experiences, well worth it.

Finally, it's essential to remember that you're a guest in Nagoya and its vibrant nightlife scene. Be respectful of the city and its residents, and treat the establishments you visit with care. By showing appreciation for the local culture and customs, you'll not only ensure a safer night out but also create positive memories for yourself and those around you. And you might find a new party friend to go out with on Saturday night.
